Hi Subscriber First Name,

July has been vaguely unhinged. My husband has been quite literally flattened by a back injury which has thrown the last couple of weeks into chaos.

But, such is life. I’ve been finding comfort in work, locking myself away in my office for a few hours and ignore his cries for assistance (not really…) and design never fails to bring me joy.

Here are a couple of snippets from inside the studio and my brain from the last month.

What I’m making

I originally designed Tomoko's Kitchen's logo a couple of years ago, but as her business grew, she needed more consistency across her brand. So I recently built out a fuller system - a colour palette and typography to sit alongside the logo. The soft neutrals, koji-inspired tones, and a surprising pop of orange keep it warm and minimal, just like Tomo.

What I'm thinking about

Children’s book illustration! I'm in the early stages of an exciting project with a friend and it's lighting me up. This is a new world - I can draw, but the conventions and specifications around illustrating an entire book are new to me.

I've enrolled in a class at Hazelhurst - a lovely local gallery - specifically focussed on illustrating for children's books. I'm SO excited to get started later this month. I’m also a huge nerd and just love a course.

What I'm loving

Please give me all the analogue activities. Instant and 35mm photography, weaving, mindless sketching. I spend most of my days staring at a screen, making things pixel-perfect, and there's something refreshing about switching gears and playing in a space where I don't have the same level of control. I let the materials be my guide, and the results are a surprise. I love thinking about how I can take a more analogue approach my design projects.
